My stay was disappointing. Whilst the location of the hotel is fantastic, and there are some real positives, I am afraid that the hotel’s Management Team at Grand Mercure, Rio de Janeiro, have completely lost their way. The lack of attention to some very simple guest needs was a real shock. I spent six nights in March 2025 in an ‘upgraded’ room, but boy O’boy it was a real let down. For starters, the positives. The location is great, right on Copacabana strip. The lobby is superb with working desks thoughtfully provided for those who don’t wish to work on their laptops from their room. The executive lounge is also a gem with a good selection of breakfast foods and super attentive staff. The coffee is delicious and they even serve ‘bubbles’ at breakfast for those that want that. In the pool area too, the pool attendant was super friendly and buzzing around those who wanted, or did not want, shade and was good with towels and moving chairs to suit the guests. However, these pluses cannot outweigh the dire state of the room attention and other parts of the service offering. The bed linen, whilst clean, is of very poor quality. The pillows in my room were cheap and well past their useful life. Quite honestly my pets sleep on more comfortable bedding. Next, DRINKING WATER. Why on earth potable water is not provided in the rooms daily is a complete mystery. For a country with a humid tropical, and subtropical, climate and high daily temperatures, guests need water. This really should not have to be ‘purchased’ from the hotel. I chose to get a supply from a local supermarket, but as a business man I have never had to do that in any other hotel I have ever stayed at ….. come on, where’s the customer focus? Water ….. really ??? Also, the state of the room air conditioning unit needs mentioning. The housekeeping staff clearly don’t think it’s their job to clean the dust and grime buildup. And finally, probably the biggest crime, is the fact that the reception staff clearly are allowed to present their own ‘individual’ style of customer attention. Whilst certain of the staff were outwardly happy and friendly, clearly others were - shall we say - “having a bad day” ……. “Every day”. Guys, a smile goes a long way. So, overall, much improvement is needed. I do hope that Leticia Morett, who is from the management team, and with whom I spoke, is able to impress on the team that change needs to happen. The linen, the pillows, the water and some joined-up front desk service. Thank you.

The Grand Mercure Rio de Janeiro Copacabana was the worst client experience I ever had in terms of hotel stay. I booked this hotel for 4 nights in April of 2025 for my family and I. Here are the facts: Day one: - Took nearly 30 minutes for checking in, even though there was no line waiting. The procedure is simply too long. - I was informed in the check in that the crib for my daughter was already in the room. - Upon asking what was the price of having breakfast, I was informed that the breakfast was free of charge (keep this information for day 5 at checkout) - Upon entering the room for the first time, the baby crib was not there, the TV was on with a high volume with no remote control to be found, some towels were missing as well. - I called reception and it took about half an hour and 2 people to turn off the TV and to supply us with a working remote control. - The crib arrived some minutes later, only for the hotel staff to realize that the crib wouldn’t pass the door. They took apart the crib before installing it to our room. - All of the above happened while we were in the room with our baby. - At night, while all of us were sleeping, between 2 and 3 am, the TV turned on out of nowhere with the max volume waking us up, and of course, our 10 month old baby. We turned off the TV but it kept turning on during 1h, not allowing us to sleep. Day two: - We complained at reception about the TV problem and they told us they would fix it during the day (spoiler alert: they didn’t) - Housekeeping brought some extra towels (from the missing towels complaint), only to remove and not replace the hand towels (?). - The toilet paper support broke down while we were using it. - The hand soap dispenser was empty (even after the housekeeping cleaned our room, it was not refilled). We complained at reception only to be delivered a half empty (!) soap dispenser. Day 3: - We arrived at the hotel after a day out exploring (at around 6:30 pm), only to arrive at a dirty room. The day before we had gone to the beach and the floor was quite sandy and towels were dirty from the beach. We called and complained, and they sent somebody to clean our room at 7 pm (!). We had to leave the room and give dinner to our starving baby at the reception because of this issue. - The air conditioning remote control stopped working (we guessed batteries), which was fixed only the day after. Day 4: - We arrived at the hotel again at the end of the day (5:30 pm) to a dirty room. We called the reception and complained, they said somebody would come soon. 30 minutes later a housekeeping lady knocked on the door for the cleaning. I asked her for 5 minutes as we would leave the room and were packing the baby stuff. As we rushed outside of the room, not to miss this rare housekeeping opportunity, the lady said – and I kid you not: “I actually looked at the clock right now and my shift is over, so I will not be cleaning your room, somebody will probably come later”. After 2 more calls to the reception, as we were dying for a shower and our baby was starting to get hungry, somebody appeared at 7 pm to finally poorly clean our room and replace the towels – a towel was still missing but we had given up begging for the right amount of towels at this point. - The TV turned on again at max volume at around 4am, waking up our baby and us – what an amazing rest before our 12h international flight the next day. Day 5: - Check out: again, a very long process for checking out and the outstanding surprise that the breakfast was indeed not free. I mentioned to the receptionist that I was told it was free at check in, and that we would not have taken it if it was not the case (as there were plenty of good cafés nearby). After a very dry exchange, I was told it was not free indeed. After all these terrible experiences we had during our stay, I expected that at least the breakfast would be offered as courtesy, but, of course, it was not. Summing up: it looks like a fancy hotel but the service is very bad overall (kitchen staff was nice, regardless). After several complains of basic stuff such as asking for a clean room, towels, TVs that don’t turn on during the night waking up the entire family, and etc, the service is not at all what even a basic hotel would offer, it’s very bad. I don’t recommend this hotel to anyone, and this will refrain me from booking any mercure hotel ever again. What a nightmare.
