Quirky hotel

This hotel is quirky in that there are so many various levels. By this, I do not mean just the floors, but stairs on the same floor. Presumably this is because of the hotel's age. My room had a step up to the bathroom, with another step into the shower. I thought the fire escape on my floor unusual, which was why I just had to take a photo. My room was of a decent size and comfortable. Car parking is not easy, nor cheap. It costs £28 per night to park in a tiny car park. Car parking has always been expensive in Brighton. This car park has not many spaces, and it is rather a tight fit. Breakfast was a mixture of cooked or continental, buffet style. The breakfast room is not large, but mostly adequate. All the staff were friendly and efficient, even if they were at times busy.

The hotel is beautiful with the original features within the hotel. Room was very clean and the bed extremely comfortable. Staff very friendly and attentive. Food - Breakfast excellent as we stayed for two nights. Friday night booked a table in the Costal Restaurant, when we arrived we were told to find a table in the small bar area, we requested the Costal Restaurant as we had booked, only one other couple dining in there. Set Menu price was for one two or three courses which was reasonable, we ordered the three courses at £30.00. We ordered with the waitress the starter main and dessert, within minutes she came back to our table and said that the set menu they did not have enough of what was on there which was quite surprising as like I have said there was only one other couple dining!!.. We ordered again and once again she came back to say sorry that is not available. The Starters there was 4 options but only two maybe one was available as both ordered the same. The Main again 4 choices only 2 available and again the dessert. So we ordered what was available but not our preferred choice of food. Even the dessert they only had one portion of dessert left. To then receive the bill there was a service charge added to the bill, so a basic fish and chip dinner with wine was £97.35. Decided then we would eat elsewhere Saturday Evening. Saturday lunchtime, upon arriving back at the Mercure, we went to the bar to order lunch, and yes again everything we wanted to eat from the menu was not available. I had to chosse three times (3) before I was able to have a light lunch. The waitress was very apologetic and did provide a glass of complimentry wine to compensate the lack of lunchtime menu. The hotel is a great location but Management really need to look at the food menus and the Chef!. Would we come back again, yes but not to eat albeit the breakfast, which if you do not get dow there quite early people were told to wait until a table become available.
