Poor Customer Service

During my stay, I encountered multiple service-related issues that made the experience far from enjoyable. While there were some positives, the recurring problems with staff attitudes and service execution overshadowed them. Below is a breakdown of the key concerns: * Minibar Deposit Mismanagement I made a deposit for refilling the minibar, which was never fulfilled. I even demonstrated this to a room service staff member, who called to confirm that it would be done immediately. However, "immediately" never materialized. While the absence of water and sodas in the minibar was not the primary issue—I managed by going to a grocery store to buy non-alcoholic refreshments—the failure to follow through and the dismissive reaction from the reception were frustrating. Abidjan is very hot, and while I appreciated the complimentary bottle of water provided by room service, this situation reflected a lack of attention to service. At checkout, reception implied that I may have emptied the minibar myself, which was not only inaccurate but offensive. Upon follow-up, I received a reluctant "you were right," paired with the suggestion that I should have informed them—despite having done so in person with room service. * Broken Wardrobe Lamp Switch The wardrobe lamp switch was broken, leaving a bright light on throughout the night. A maintenance staff member acknowledged the issue and assured me it would be fixed the next day, but no action was taken. I had to improvise to mitigate the light. At checkout, I was questioned about why I hadn't followed up to change rooms. While this was a nice offer, it places an unnecessary burden on guests. The hotel should have tracked the issue and ensured it was resolved promptly. * Manager's Lack of Engagement During my interactions with reception, the person attending to me frequently referred to a manager "in the back" to check what could be done. I was handed a business card—presumably of the manager—with a suggestion to call next time to organize a better room. This approach was confusing and raised several questions: if the manager was present and involved in the discussion, why did they not come out to address the concerns directly? Why not hand over the card personally? It also left me uncertain whether the card was truly personal or just a general contact number. * Defensive and Unhelpful Attitudes at Reception Across various incidents—such as the minibar issue, broken lamp switch, and delayed laundry—the reception staff consistently displayed a defensive and unhelpful demeanor. This was particularly frustrating as the trip was for business purposes, and the hotel was aware through their system that no refunds, discounts, or other adjustments were possible. Unlike individual travelers who may complain to seek a reduced bill, corporate or business travelers cannot do so as arrangements are prepaid and settled. My feedback was intended to highlight service issues and ensure improvement, but I was often made to feel as though my concerns were unwelcome or exaggerated. * Poor Service at "La Brasserie" Dining at "La Brasserie" was frustrating due to repeated mistakes with orders, including missing dishes and reorders. The lack of English proficiency among the staff was a significant barrier. While I understand that French is the local language, this is an international hospitality service, and basic English skills should be expected. Some staff members exhibited unprofessional behavior, such as eye-rolling, interruptions, and passive-aggressiveness. While this might be tolerated in some places, it is entirely out of place in Abidjan. * Unpredictable Laundry Service I submitted two laundry bags and shoes before the cutoff for same-day service. However, nothing was returned that day. The next day, only one bag and the shoes arrived, despite multiple follow-ups with the reception. I had to go to the reception again in person to request my full laundry, where I was met with dismissive and unhelpful attitudes, as though I was being unreasonable for seeking a resolution. At checkout, there was no record of the second laundry bag, leaving me frustrated and undervalued as a guest. * Security The security team stood out as a positive aspect. They were strict yet polite, creating a sense of safety and professionalism. * Breakfast and Room Service The breakfast offered a wide variety of options, and the service was prompt. The room itself was impeccably clean and well-maintained throughout my stay. On some evenings, I even received a thoughtful sundown service, with slippers placed neatly by the bed—an appreciated gesture. Additionally, the bathroom was spotless and equipped with all the necessary amenities. The tasteful artwork throughout the hotel added a relaxing and harmonious touch to the overall environment. Conclusion: While there were some redeeming qualities, such as security, breakfast, and housekeeping, the overall service quality fell far below expectations for a hotel of this caliber. The defensive attitudes, lack of follow-through, and unprofessional behavior by key staff significantly detracted from the experience. The unclear role of the manager in resolving issues added to the confusion. For international guests who do not speak French, the lack of English communication skills among staff can further complicate matters. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this hotel, as it does not live up to its star rating or the standards expected in international hospitality.
