No Longer an Up-Market Hotel

Whoever made the decision to place a permanent 50m garish, neon-coloured children's slide right in the foreground of one of the best views in the Blue Mountains, should consider getting out of the hospitality business. The ruined view from two of the main dining areas (and many of the rooms) of this hotel only reinforces the idea that you have entered a theme park, not a relaxing hotel in natural surroundings. The Fairmont has been a regular, short-stay retreat for us, for many years. In recent times, we've seen the resort gradually add more features to appeal to children and families. All of these (such as the pony stables, the maze, the sports courts, the playrooms, the ice-rink, etc) have all been sympathetically added or enlarged to blend with the beautiful natural surroundings. But that muti-coloured slide has gone too far! But our biggest disappointment, on this visit, was the total absence of a quality dining experience. Of the claimed "five stunning dining options", for dinner during our stay, the only option available was the Sublime Cafe, which offers quite a restricted pub bistro-like menu (Deep-fried sharing plates, burgers, etc). The other main dinner option, "Embers", was closed for three nights, for reasons unexplained. We took our evening dining business elsewhere. It seems incomprehensible that a 'resort' of the size and reputation of the Fairmont could only offer us a burger or a lame salad for dinner, possibly seated at a table in a corridor that connects the reception area to half of the hotel's rooms. On the plus side, our room was generous in size, clean, quiet and very comfortable. The staff tried hard and were friendly and service-orientated. And you certainly can't beat the stunning mountain and valley views from the hotel, and the proximity to other great scenery, walks, and Blue Mountains attractions.

Not very clean hotel.

Nice enough place, things to do with children. However train was cancelled due to weather (it was spitting and I feel fine to do still). Hotel room - stains on carpet, old dirt in bathroom, no quilt cover, terrible lighting, plugs didn’t work unless you had lights on (not helpful when you have kids and need to use white noise over night)!! Unfortunately photos of the courtyard room shown nice views and when arrived the courtyard we had was in car park - asked to move but they couldn’t due to availability. Restaurants on arrival had 45 minutes wait (you’d think for a hotel that size and booked out they would know this and be prepared). Breakfast we probably highlight. Good food and staff. Shame, wouldn’t rush back.

Resort extremely well equipped. View from room, 3rd floor windows awesome. Food at sublime lounge restaurant was great, although additional choices would be good. Entertainment options for kids were many, although midweek, very few were open. Room was comfortable. Gardens including the lakes were great. Walking tracks , cliff top walk, sublime point, gladstone lookout or wentworth falls, accessible near the stables and adventure park.
