Bed bug bites - an awful, painful experience

Incident: Bed bugs: first time I was repeatedly bitten in 6 different areas with the associated pain, itching, and suffering, and I have regularly stayed in hotels for over 50 years (business and pleasure). The pain and itching has lasted for a week and is still ongoing. Fortunately, the rest of my family were not victims. Reponse: After reporting the incident to the reception and showing a photo of the bites (I offered a live look which they refused), they said they were sorry and would see if they could get us another room, but they themselves cannot, MANAGEMENT must determine what to do, and MANAGEMENT was not there at 8AM on a weekday. We couldn’t wait since we had a booked tour, so we packed up all our luggage and had them store it in the hope we would receive a different room when we came back. That evening the receptionist provided us a key to a different room without comment. No note, no email, no SMS, no contact. Communication: Initially when we arrived, we had to provide all our contact data, yet MANAGEMENT did not contact us during our entire stay about the incident, although they must have known since THEY are the only ones who can approve a move to another room. The competition: Why not just checkout early and go elsewhere? Well, we were there during Carnival and the Mobile World Congress, so realistically there were no alternative accomodations. Risk/pest management: Ibis Santa Coloma is a mid-level hotel (not even an ibis budget) and I had often stayed at the ibis chain with good experiences. So, I intentionally paid more than alternative budget hotels when I booked expecting a better sanitary/pest situation. While hygiene was super, the pests made it miserable. Management must 1) decide the appropriate preventative/reactive measures, and here they failed. But 2) they also failed to interact with their guest client thereafter and show consideration and “make it right”. They didn’t suffer, but I did due to their lack of diligence. The hotel MANAGEMENT at Ibis Santa Coloma is glad to take your money and enjoy their profits while a guest suffers; they don’t seem to care what happens to their guests when they are in pain due to bed bug bites received in their rooms. However, the receptionists, cleaning, and breakfast team are all very friendly, kind, and considerate and try to be as helpful as they can. Trust: to be able to sleep well at night, one has to have the feeling one will not get bitten or eaten during the night. Unfortunately, that was not the case for us. We paid extra, yet the trust was broken. Summary: Physically the worst hotel experience, I had often heard of bed bugs, but never experienced it until now. And now I can empathize with other travelers. But comfy mattresses, clean rooms, delicious breakfast, and very friendly lower-level staff. But management was unseen and uninvolved, and I give them the blame for the lack of sufficient pest control and lack of contact, empathy, and resolution/compensation with a suffering guest.

Recepcionists can decide to move a guest to another room but, as it was Mobile World Congress, at that time the hotel was fully booked, so we had to wait to have clean rooms to make the movement. As soon as we know about your situation, we called our pest company to quickly check the room. They came in the morning, and they checked everything, but no trace of bed bugs or another insects weres found. They told us that it was probably another kind of reason, as only one person was affected. We leave all this information to our team, as you were coming back in the afternoon, but we do apologize as maybe we needed to speak with you personally. On the other hand, we appreciate all you good comments about the rest of the team and we will share with them.
