Un hôtel de légende qui vend à prix d’or son passé prestigieux. Un bon 5 étoiles mais absolument pas un palace du type Mamounia ou Royal Mansour à Marrakech pour rester dans le style colonial arabe. Accueil professionnel mais peu chaleureux, piscine avec une vue magnifique sur l’île d’éléphantine. Chambre immense malheureusement non exempte de défauts: pas de prise pour le chargeur près du lits et des rallonges multiprises comme dans un deux étoiles. Clientèle à 50% chinoise et des groupes d’américains.

One of our now favourite hotels - stayed in a Palace suite for two nights after a two week Nile cruise - fabulously comfortable bed and great pillows. Ate at the Oriental restaurant the first night - the stuffed pigeon was so delicious we may have it on repeat tonight! The views of the Nile from our room and from the gardens are second to none. On arrival we took a boat tour from the hotel’s dock around Elephantine Island and down to the first cataract, highly recommended. We both had a Nubian Experience treatment in the lovely spa which was two hours of bliss by Emy and Alice, two very experienced lovely ladies. Unlike a previous review, we found ALL the Spa staff welcoming who provided us with a seamless booking experience and great treatments. From Batcy, who greeted us and gave us a tour of the hotel, the bar and restaurant staff, security men to our lovely laundry man - all gave exceptional service. We will be back!

Compare this hotel to the Sofitel in Luxor and you can see why privatization is key to Egypt's future. The majority owner is a person, not the government and this hotel functions on a totally different level. We had an Opera Suite in the new building. I saw the opera suites in the old building and it turned out I was glad we were in the new building. The old building did not offer suites with connecting rooms on the Nile side which is how we wound up in the new building. While both are nicely decorated, the new building suites are corner rooms with lots of windows and light and large terraces with killer views over the Nile and the city. The older building suites have a small balcony and the rooms are much darker. We liked the modern decor although some others don't like the lime green tones. The hotel's spa is excellent; there is a beautiful indoor pool open till 9pm. The outdoor pool is large and pretty. There is a gym that is not bad but could be better for a resort of this type. Bring your own foam roller. The breakfast room (also the gourmet 1902 restaurant) is in an awesome room that is one of the most impressive dining rooms anywhere on the planet. They need and have some 7 foot staff members in uniform to fit in with the Cordoba-like cathedral sense of the room. The breakfast buffet was quite decent and dinner was also very good at 2 of the 3 restaurants on property. We especially liked the Egyptian restaurant with beautifully presented food that also tasted great. The international restaurant was good but not particularly impressive. We liked the gourmet 1902 restaurant as well. The suites have butler service here, but it works well until it doesn't. Butlers here want to be a single point of contact but that doesn't work when their phones break or they go off property. If they are going to be a single point of contact, they either need to have backup phones or forward their calls to a colleague if they are going to be out of touch. This property has lots of pretty areas and gardens and a sense of history about it. There is no place to walk around outside the property but you probably don't care. Many tourists don't reach Aswan and maybe the sites here are not as great as Luxor (tip: take a boat ride to the Elephantine island across the Nile and walk around the island and see the museum), but this property is compelling and also at a gateway to reach Abu Simbel which is something you'd want to see if you were visiting Egypt. We thought this resort was better than any other we'd seen either in Israel or Jordan. it's not cheap but still offers good value for money compared to the rest of the world. The resort alone is a good enough reason to visit Aswan.
