Siem Reap is both a province and its capital city in Cambodia. It is the second most visited city in all of Cambodia, after Phnom Penh – and with good reason too. Most people visit Siem Reap for the magnificent temples and while Angkor Wat is certainly the most famous, it is just one of well-over a thousand in the Angkor Archaeological Park! Covering a massive area of 400 sq km, the Angkor Archaeological park contains the remnants of the various capital cities of the ancient Khmer Empire (built between the 9th and the 15th centuries). Together, these magnificent archaeological sites make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remaining one of the most important historical locations in all of Southeast Asia – attracting over 2-million tourists every year. The sunrise over Angkor Wat is well worth getting out of bed for, though it can be a little crowded as other people have the same idea. You can take your time exploring Angkor Archaeological Park with a week long pass or go for three or even one day if you just want to get a good overview before enjoying the rest of what Siem Reap has to offer. Dine out and party at the famous Pub Street – if you are a fan of karaoke, a few drinks, and some good fun, then you will definitely have a great time on Pub Street. Even for those who would rather have a more chilled evening there are plenty of places offering a quieter dining experience, and spots where you can people watch and enjoy the fun without being right in the middle of it. Explore Siem Reap on a bike tour – Siem Reap has some truly exceptional bike routes for you to enjoy, heading both into the Angkor Archaeological Park and all around Siem Reap city itself. Buy spices and souvenirs at one of the many local markets – the local markets in Siem Reap are some of the nicest in Cambodia. The locals are wonderful people who really enjoy a chat, a good haggle, and showing off their wares to people who might appreciate them. It is a perfect place to buy any gifts for people at home, or just to get some souvenirs for yourself to commemorate the trip and help you remember this wonderful place for years to come. Visit the Landmine Museum – beginning when a young former soldier, Aki Ra, was found clearing landmines and keeping the defused remains, the Landmine Museum is a great way to educate yourself on landmines in Cambodia and the impact they can have. Check out the Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre – home to so many beautiful species of butterfly, don't miss a chance to see one of the largest enclosed butterfly centres in the world while here. Pay a visit to Phare, the Cambodian Circus – if you are a fan of the arts and promoting local artists, give the Cambodian Circus a visit and see how they are promoting and encouraging art and culture in the country. Take one of many cooking classes and learn to cook your favourite Cambodian dishes – Cambodian food is delicious and has both similarities and differences with its neighbouring countries' cuisines.
