Kramskoi TripAdvisor review

The first thing to make clear is that there are two adjacent Ibis hotels at Schiphol – there’s ‘Ibis’ and then there is ‘Ibis Budget’ which is just behind it and served by the same shuttle bus. I stayed at the ‘Ibis’ and that’s the one I am reviewing. There’s also an ‘Ibis Styles’ nearby, but I’m not quite sure where. I stayed three nights, which is quite a long time to stay at an airport hotel, but it was much cheaper than staying in the centre of Amsterdam, where accommodation is insanely expensive. In fact, getting into the city is no problem, especially if you buy a 2 or 3-day travel card which gives you access to all buses, trams, metro and also the airport train. The bus stop for the 397 into the city is literally a five minute walk from the hotel. Alternatively, use the shuttle to the airport and take the train. For late night return from the city, take the train to the airport and either get on the hotel shuttle bus, if it is waiting, or the 397 which stops opposite the hotel and runs frequently, even late at night. They go from adjacent stands at the airport. My room was a ‘Superior’ room, located in the incomprehensibly-named ‘Sweet Wing’ (presumably a play on words that got lost in the translation). The room was simple and essentially fine because it satisfied the three basic criteria: it was spotlessly clean, it was extremely quiet at night, and the large double bed was comfortable. If you want a hotel with a nice view to enjoy on a city break, you’ll be disappointed. But if you want something functional while you spend your money on other things, it’s perfectly adequate. There is also a huge pond at the front of the hotel and lots of rabbits in the green spaces around the hotel, which are fun to watch. Breakfast is rather pricey (18 Euros), but there’s a fair amount of choice and you can have as much as you like. On the first night, I tried their a la carte restaurant, l’Estaminet, which I found to be ludicrously over-priced for fairly unspectacular food. The fish curry I had was rather dry, had zero heat for a curry and came with a strange sort of bean/potato salad rather than rice. At 27 Euros, that’s frankly a bit of a joke, so I can’t recommend the restaurant. Other minuses about the hotel. - There’s no tea/coffee making facility in the rooms. If you are a keen tea drinker like me (to the point of bringing your own teabags), having to pay 3 Euros in the reception area for a cardboard cup of hot water isn’t good. In fact, for two of the three days of my stay the machine was broken anyway and the bar didn’t serve tea or coffee. - Navigating the hotel is astonishingly confusing. The signage is awful. When I arrived the first day, it literally took longer to find my room than it did to get from the airport to the hotel on the shuttle bus! This is because the rooms are located on several ‘wings’ (with unfortunate overtones of a prison or a hospital), with various corridors branching off from each wing. Entering the ‘Sweet Wing’, I had to find the second floor, but repeatedly walked past the lift until one of the staff kindly directed me to it; it’s camouflaged because it is covered with enormous images advertising the breakfast buffet, and there is no actual sign pointing to it. To get to the breakfast buffet or the restaurant from Floors 2 – 4 in the ‘Sweet Wing’ you have to get the lift to the ground floor, go out to the reception area at the front and then go up the escalator to Floor 4. That said, there are lots of pluses about Ibis Schiphol. - the room, though not huge, was perfectly adequate, and the bathroom used the space ingeniously, so it wasn’t too cramped. It also had a good shower. - my bed was very comfortable. One recent review describes the mattress as ‘two inches thick’. Mine was indeed two inches thick: it was a topper placed on a six inch mattress, so it was absolutely fine. - the room was very quiet indeed. A review on this site describes the walls as ‘paper thin’. This was certainly not my experience: it’s a modern airport hotel, so of course everything is soundproofed. I literally heard no extraneous sound at all during the three nights I slept there. - the free wi-fi was absolutely outstanding. Probably the best I have experienced in any hotel. - the shuttle bus to the airport is very good. It has to be: the hotel is too far away from the airport to walk to it, so the shuttle service is absolutely essential. But you can use it as much as you like and it’s really easy to take the shuttle to the airport and then transfer to the the train if you want to go into Amsterdam. - The staff were all friendly and helpful, especially considering how busy the hotel constantly is. It must be high pressure working on the reception desk. When I was checking in, I did encounter rudeness, but only from another guest who was checking in at the desk next to me. I can only commend the member of staff for dealing with the obnoxious behaviour of the guest with courtesy and professionalism. It does make me wonder whether complaints on this site about the attitude of the hotel staff sometimes say more about the attitude of the people writing the review, but I guess everyone’s experience is different. As I said at the start of the review, there is an ‘Ibis Budget’ hotel just behind. It’s much smaller and I have to say that it looked a bit grim from the outside, though I didn’t go in. But do make sure you know which one you are staying at. Weirdly, the room rates advertised during my stay were higher for the Ibis Budget hotel than for the Ibis. Go figure…! Would I stay again? If it was just overnight, yes absolutely. For a few days, I might see whether I could get a deal in the city centre, because it is nice just to be able to walk out of your hotel straight into the city, but it comes at a cost – and Amsterdam is really expensive. For the money, Ibis Schiphol seems to me to represent good value.

Don’t expect much

sunburnt_and_salty05 Solo travel - TripAdvisor review

I expected something closer to the quality of a Holiday Inn but this was far inferior. Rooms are very much like a college dorm in aesthetic and size. Walls are paper thin. Someone in the room next had a coughing fit for 45 mins at 3am and it sounded like he was in the same room. You get one lumpy pillow, the mattress is like 2 inches of foam on a platform and no conditioner in the shower. The shuttle can also be very packed. It’s cheap but not that cheap…

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We're sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations. We understand how frustrating it can be when accommodations don't align with what you had in mind, especially when it comes to comfort and rest. We sincerely apologize for the noise issues and the discomfort you experienced with the bedding and room amenities. Your feedback about the room design, sound insulation, and shuttle service is extremely valuable and has been shared with our team as we work on making improvements. While we aim to provide affordable accommodations, we also want to ensure our guests feel comfortable and well taken care of, and we regret that we fell short in your case. Thank you again for your feedback—it truly helps us improve. If there’s anything further you’d like to discuss, please feel free to contact us directly.
